Camp Comstock Sailing Instructor - Ithaca, NY

We are seeking a Camp Sailing Instructor at Camp Comstock in Ithaca, NY, located along the shores of Cayuga Lake. Campers enjoy the unique natural surroundings created by the Finger Lakes while living in beautiful tree-top cabin village units. Comstock features nearly two miles of lakefront, offering a wide variety of water sports and a beautiful location to enjoy the sunrise or sunset.  

Job Summary:

The Sailing Instructor is responsible for overseeing the planning and delivery of all sailing activities at the camp’s waterfront. The Sailing Instructor will provide safety and skill instruction that is age appropriate and progressive. The Sailing Instructor works closely with the Waterfront Director and performs counselor responsibilities.


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

Attend mandatory staff training.

Attend staff meetings.

Maintaining knowledge about the facility and its emergency action plan; ensure proper safety procedures are followed during all sailing  activities, and activate the emergency action plan when necessary, and alerting the Waterfront Manager of emergencies and safety risks as needed.

Utilize CPR and First Aid training as necessary.

Set up and clean up the waterfront prior to and after daily usage in coordination with the Waterfront Manager, ensuring daily logs maintained in conjunction with other waterfront staff to monitor equipment (boats, tillers, sails, et cetera).

Understanding and administration of lesson plans for sailing that are age appropriate, hands on and educational.

Deliver robust and engaging programming.

Ensuring campers are challenged, expand upon any prior skill and that the program is girl-led.

Maintain working knowledge of Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints, NYS Department of Health Standards, and American Camp Association safety regulations for sailing, and ensure adherence to all safety procedures during sailing activities.

Supervise counselors assigned to assist with sailing, including providing spontaneous feedback when applicable.

Keep the Camp Director and Waterfront Manager regularly informed of waterfront staff performance, morale and conflicts.

Lead other forms of boating (canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding) as assigned.

Act as a leader and role model to other staff members through enthusiastic participation in all camp programming.

Utilize excellent customer service skills, maintain a professional demeanor and positive, upbeat disposition, maintain the tenets of the Girl Scout Law, maintain a willingness to help others, and communicate with other staff members in a way that is positive and encouraging.

Cover unit staff evenings off, rest hours off, and any and all other time-off as assigned.

Serve as a unit mentor on a weekly basis. Conduct frequent check-ins with the assigned unit during unit time; serve as a resource for unit counselors needing support.

Assist with weekly camp clean up, including sweeping, mopping, sanitizing, trash pick- up, etc.

Adhere to all COVID-19 protocols required by NYS Department of Health and GSNYPENN.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Sailing Instructor supervises assigned counselors, along with supervising campers.


Minimum Qualification Standards:

Be at least 18 years of age.

Willingness to obtain CPR and First Aid if not currently certified.

Required documented experience instructing basic sailing lessons for adults or children, OR extensive personal knowledge of and participation in sailing, OR Current USA Sailing Certification.

Current Motorboat Boating Safety certification from US Coast Guard or Power Squadron (or willingness to obtain).

Believe in the Girl Scout mission.

Have training and/or experience working with children in an outdoor setting a must.

Prior summer day or resident camp experience preferred (Girl Scout camp experience a plus).


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple projects and details simultaneously.

Possess good character, integrity, patience, sense of humor, enthusiasm, a high level of flexibility, and willingness to be a part of the camp community.

Ability to work productively in a fast paced, stressful environment.


Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to move objects.

Walking on uneven terrain, up and down hills for distances up to ½ mile

Endurance to meet emergency needs

Ability (and willingness) to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours

The employee is subject to inside and/or outside environmental conditions, noise, outdoor elements such as rain, wind, sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes and bats.
