Director of Communications

As Director of Communications, you will be a member of the Leadership Team and supervisor to three direct reports. You will drive the organization's success by building and directing strategic communications systems and processes that support an annual plan to educate the public about the realities of hunger using an equity lens across multiple channels. 

 

You will be:

·      able to write, create and produce digital and printed communications and marketing materials

·      experienced in brand management and common message frameworks

·      knowledgeable about non-profit fundraising

·      curious and interested in learning new things

 

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Communications strategy, planning & budgeting

·         Works across the organization to create and implement an annual strategic communications plan that includes public relations, media, engagement, fundraising, donor stewardship, and internal communication.

·         Creates communications strategy and rollout plan for using an equity lens.

·         Oversees creation and implementation of a robust and competitive digital fundraising program led by the Digital Manager.

·         Oversees all storytelling and public education initiatives led by the Community Engagement Manager.

·         Writes and manages executive-level internal and external communications plans and communications.

·         Builds tools and systems for internal communication that foster a transparent, inclusive, participatory, and celebratory work culture.

·         Evaluates the effectiveness of communication methodologies and iterates through regular reporting and continuous improvement practices. 

·         Creates content and manages project development, including editing, writing, organizing stories, and seeking locations for placement.

·         Ensures appropriate and strategic goals for communications are in place for each program area and initiative.

·         Creates and manages budgets for paid advertising, vendors, printing, etc.

Brand management

·         Manages key messages and visual appearance of messaging to ensure consistency with Food Bank's core brand identity.

·         Ensures that all messaging is consistent with Food Bank's overall communications objectives and accurately reflects the organization's values.

·         Oversees the creation of messaging that educates the public about the Food Bank and the realities of hunger.

·         Shares guidelines for the production, brand identity, and core message platforms with staff and vendors.

Fundraising & outreach

·         Oversees creation and production of Food Bank materials, including newsletters, annual reports, major gift proposals and reports, and other outreach materials as needed.

·         Directs all print and digital production aspects, including project quotes, vendor management, and contract negotiations.

·         Manages Volunteer Coordinator to effectively and efficiently coordinate a successful Volunteer Program that feeds into the donor pipeline.

Media & public relations

·         Identifies opportunities for additional media coverage, and professional video and photography engagement.

·         Forecasts, plans, and manages all aspects of the Food Bank's public relations activities, including all media (traditional media, social, paid, and in-kind).

·         Implements public relations activities to support cause marketing campaigns and special events with other Senior Leadership Team members to ensure support for all activities of the Food Bank.

·         Manages media and public relations strategies to increase awareness about the realities of hunger and increase the visibility of the Food Bank across our six-county service area.

·         Oversees the creation and management of the annual media plan, including advertising schedules, media alerts, press releases, and press conferences as needed.

·         Oversees management of public speaking engagements and media interviews with staff as needed.

·         Oversees marketing logistics, outreach materials, and signage for annual Food Bank special events, cause marketing, and digital fundraising campaigns.

Supervision 

·         Establish relationships based on trust and mutual accountability. 

·         Ensures staff members are familiar with and adhere to organizational values, policies, and procedures. 

·         Engages staff in the development of annual goals and objectives. 

·         Meets regularly with staff to track progress to goals and provide regular feedback on performance in addition to formal annual performance evaluations. 

·         Ensures the ongoing development and effectiveness of the team by making available adequate tools, systems, and training on a consistent basis to carry out work effectively. 

·         Hires, trains, schedules, motivates, evaluates, supports, and directs employees to optimize workplace productivity and promote professional growth. 

Leadership 

·         Serves as a member of the Food Bank's Leadership Team and works collaboratively with colleagues throughout the organization to ensure alignment with the broader goals of the Food Bank. 

·         Identifies opportunities to break down silos and ensure transparent and effective communication and partnership across departments. 

·         Positively contributes to the organizational culture by promoting and modeling organizational values.  

General

·         Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

·    Bachelor's Degree required.   

 

·    Minimum of five (5) years in communications and marketing.

·    Minimum of two (2) years in a supervisory role.

·    Non-profit development and fundraising environment is preferred.

·    Proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office programs.

·    Experience in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) is a plus.

·    Copywriting and editing experience are essential; specific experience in drafting measurably effective solicitation and stewardship materials is preferred.
