Senior Staff Accountant - Cicero, NY

The important role of the Senior Accountant supports various aspects of the financial management for Girl Scouts NYPenn Pathways revenue cycles including, but not limited to, investments, retail sales, program revenues, and donations. 

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Provide cross-department financial reporting oversight, including compliance, accounting, and reporting for all grants, restricted donations, and endowments.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual general ledger closing processes, the independent audit, tax returns, and other regulatory filings as needed.
  • Ensure transactions are in accordance with GAAP and internal policies and controls are followed; communicate exceptions to management.
  • Maintain monthly reconciliation of all supporting software to confirm accuracy and completeness of financial system.
  • Perform other accounting functions and reporting for internal and external reporting purposes.
  • Ensure all assigned responsibilities are supported with detailed processes and procedures along with cross-training of staff for all financial tasks.
  • Evaluate workflows for accuracy, efficiency, and appropriateness.
  • Help develop and implement accounting procedures by analyzing current procedures; recommending changes.
  • Assists with annual audit by pulling data and helping to maintain auxiliary reports.
  • Posts revenues by verifying and entering transactions form all third party programs and local deposits.
  • Reviews check requisitions for accuracy, completeness, coding and approval prior to entry.
  • Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare and properly document journal entries.
  • Provides good customer service through respectfully coaching and explaining Finance Department policies and systems to staff and vendors.
  • Maintains, and coordinates the implementation of accounting policies and control procedures.
  • Works interdepartmentally to ensure Council goals are met and establishes positive working relationships with staff in departments necessary to gather information to meet volunteer, donor, and other constituent requirements.
  • Attends other meetings as appropriate with managers, directors, volunteers, service centers, etc.
  • Works productively with a diverse group of people.
  • Other related duties as requested.

Minimum Qualification Standards:

  • Bachelor's degree or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles, practices, and internal controls.
  • Minimum of three years of accounting experience.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook with strong Excel skills and experience utilizing computerized accounting programs.
  • Must hold membership (or will obtain membership) in the Girl Scout organization and subscribe to the tenets of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
  • Occasional travel may be required. Must have ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Must have access to reliable personal transportation to travel within the Council area, have a valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

 

  • Knowledge of financial and accounting software applications. Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections.
  • Must possess maturity and sensitivity to confidential information.
  • Professional manner and appearance.
  • Able to work with minimal direction and supervision, with ability to organize time and duties, follow through with assignments and meet deadlines. Ability to coordinate numerous ongoing activities.
  • Flexibility in work assignments and interest in assuming new responsibilities in an evolving work situation are essential.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills to establish clear expectations in a fast-paced setting.
  • Comfort with uncertainty and ambiguity while being proactive in anticipating and preempting problems.
  • Represent the council as needed to both internal and external audiences.
  • Computer Software: Microsoft Office to include Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint; Salesforce, Doubleknot, and other vendor-specific software, bulk email software, inventory and retail software.
