Camp Comstock CIT Coordinator - Ithaca, NY

Looking to have some fun this summer helping to build girls of courage, confidence and character?  We are looking for Camp Counselor in Training Coordinators at our Comstock Adventure Center in Ithaca, NY, located along the shores of Cayuga Lake. Campers enjoy the unique natural surroundings created by the Finger Lakes while living in beautiful tree-top cabin village units. Comstock features nearly two miles of lakefront, offering a wide variety of water sports and a beautiful location to enjoy the sunrise or sunset.  


Job Summary: 

The CIT Coordinator is responsible for administering the Counselor-In-Training development course for all program participants. The CIT Coordinator facilitates discussions and team building activities for CITs and performs counselor responsibilities.  


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend mandatory staff training.
  • Serve as on-site weekend supervisor for the CITs for one weekend during the summer.
  • Participate in the planning and conducting of pre-camp training, including training staff on the CIT program.
  • Plan, prepare and execute CIT training to all participants.
  • Regularly communicate with CIT parents via; email, at check-in or check-out, or responding to phone calls and voicemails.
  • Create weekly CIT schedules, including unit assignments, and ensure distribution to appropriate staff during staff meetings.
  • Regularly assess the CIT program participants’ performances, observing them directly working with campers on a daily basis, and provide spontaneous feedback when appropriate throughout the camp session. Ensure feedback provided is age appropriate.
  • Distribute CIT evaluations to appropriate staff and ensure completion.
  • Complete one-on-one formal, written evaluations of each CIT each Friday while camp is in session.
  • Troubleshoot any problems with CITs, including interpersonal conflicts, issues with staff, problems while CITs are in the units, et cetera.
  • Ensure adherence to safety procedures during CIT programming.
  • Serve in a unit counselor-type capacity during rest hour and evenings, supervising the CITs when they are in the unit.
  • Conduct a daily CIT meeting after breakfast each camp day to discuss CIT issues and provide ongoing training.
  • Act as a leader and role model to CITs and other staff members through enthusiastic participation in all camp programming,
  • Utilize excellent customer service skills, maintain a professional demeanor and positive, upbeat disposition, maintain the tenets of the Girl Scout Law, maintain a willingness to help others, and communicate with other staff members in a way that is positive and encouraging.
  • Assist with weekly camp clean up, including sweeping, mopping, sanitizing, trash pick-up, etc.
  • Adhere to all COVID-19 protocols required by NYS Department of Health and GSNYPENN. Must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination.


Supervisory Responsibilities: 

The CIT Coordinator does not supervise employees, but does supervise campers


Minimum Qualification Standards:

  • Be at least 20 years of age.
  • Possess at least one summer of camp staff experience.
  • Believe in the Girl Scout mission.
  • Prior experience teaching children, working with children, or working as a camp counselor required.
  • Current First Aid and CPR training, or willingness to obtain during pre-camp training.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple projects and details simultaneously.
  • Possess good character, integrity, patience, sense of humor, enthusiasm, a high level of flexibility, and willingness to be a part of the camp community.
  • Ability to work productively in a fast paced, stressful environment.
  • Skills related to lesson planning and implementation, such as: time management, creativity, flexibility, and public speaking skills.


Physical Requirements:

  • Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
  • Walking on uneven terrain, up and down hills for distances up to ½ mile
  • Endurance to meet emergency needs
  • Ability (and willingness) to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours
