Camp Comstock Outdoor Program Facilitator - New York State

We are seeking an Outdoor Program Facilitator at Comstock Adventure Center in Ithaca, NY which is located along the shores of Cayuga Lake. Campers enjoy the unique natural surroundings created by the Finger Lakes while living in beautiful tree-top cabin village units. Comstock features nearly two miles of lakefront, offering a wide variety of water sports and a beautiful location to enjoy the sunrise or sunset.  


Job Summary:

The Outdoor Program Facilitator is responsible for staffing Girl Scout outdoor programming by providing active instruction, as well as ensuring a safe environment.


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: (Additional duties as assigned)


•     Maintain an understanding of how to instruct lessons regarding archery and all Girl Scout outdoor badges.

•     Facilitate lessons that are age appropriate, progressive, hands on and educational.

•     Maintain knowledge about the archery range and its emergency action plan during outdoor programs.

•     Ensure proper safety procedures are followed during all outdoor programs, and activate the emergency action plan when necessary.

•     Check status of archery equipment, and set up and put away archery during each usage.

•     Perform any necessary clean up after program to leave facility as it was found (or better), including sweeping, mopping, sanitizing, and trash pick up.

•     Utilize CPR and First Aid as necessary.

•     Interact with Girl Scouts and adults in a consistently positive and welcoming manner, utilizing strong customer service skills and maintaining good rapport.

•     Welcome girls and adults to the program in a positive, inviting, outgoing and inclusive manner.

•     Apply basic principles of youth development.

•     Work with the fellow staff in a way that is cohesive, positive and uplifting.

•     Act as a role model and positive representative for Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways

•     Maintain a working knowledge of general camp safety and hazards, regularly employing the use of risk management tactics and constantly ensuring participant safety.

•     Maintain a basic understanding of GSUSA, American Camp Association and NYS Department of Health guidelines, policies and standards as related to outdoor programming.

•     Adhere to all COVID-19 protocols required by NYS Department of Health and GSNYPENN.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Outdoor Program Facilitator does not supervise employees.


Minimum Qualification Standards:

•     Be at least 18 years of age.

•     Ability and commitment to travel to Tompkins, Broome and Cortland Counties.

•     Valid Driver’s License preferred but not required.

•     Must be able to commit to working programs that include almost exclusively evening, weekend and overnight work conditions.

•     Must be available for pre-season/pre-program training.

•     Must hold membership in the Girl Scout organization (post-hiring) and subscribe to the tenets of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

•     Possess good character, integrity, patience, sense of humor, enthusiasm, a high level of flexibility, and willingness to be a part of the campcommunity.

•     Desire to work with children in the outdoors and to immerse one’s self in the outdoor environment.

•     Documented experience working with children is required.

•     Prior summer day or resident camp experience preferred.

•     Current CPR & First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.

•     Current archery certification or willingness to obtain.

•     Current training in Lifeguard/Small Craft Safety desired, but is not required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

•     Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

•     Strong  organizational  skills  including  the  ability  to  manage  multiple  projects  and  details simultaneously.

•     Ability to work productively in a fast paced, stressful environment.


Physical and Mental Requirements:

•     Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to move objects.

•     Walking on uneven terrain, up and down hills for distances up to ½ mile

•     Endurance to meet emergency needs

•     Ability (and willingness) to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours

The  employee  is  subject  to  inside  and/or  outside  environmental  conditions,  noise,  

outdoor elements such as rain, wind, sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc.
