Preschool Assistant Teacher

Position: Preschool Assistant Teacher

Program: Head Start

Reports to: Classroom Supervisor

Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt, for 37.5 hours per week, Program Year (44 weeks per year) with benefits

 

Job Function: Assist and share the daily responsibilities with the classroom teacher in providing a secure and positive learning environment which will enable each child to obtain the awareness and skills necessary for a successful transition into Kindergarten. This environment should reflect an age-appropriate, self-learning, nurturing, enjoyable, engaging, and a self-confident space.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Arranges and prepares the classroom for the day’s learning activities.

 

Assists in administering children’s cognitive and social / emotional screening (within 45 days) to identify their developmental level and special needs (if any).

 

Work with Teacher to carry out the implementation of the Creative Curriculum, IMIL, Active Play, The Incredible Years, and teaching The Pyramid Model. Assists in the planning and curriculum preparation of the daily activities based on provided lesson plans.

 

Works collaboratively with the classroom teacher to plan and shares in lesson planning and implementation. In conjunction with the teacher, explores resources for the creation of activities which facilitate learning in all domain of the Birth to Five Early Learning Framework.

 

Use the Teaching Strategies Gold Assessment tool to observe and record children’s progress throughout the Program Year.

 

Make decisions about the education of children on the basis of information regarding: Child development and how children learn, Individual strengths, needs, and interests of each child, the cultures of each child’s family and community

 

Follow and practice the following fundamental principles: Positive interaction and relationships with adults provides a critical foundation for successful learning, Social-emotional competence is a significant factor in school success, Constructive, purposeful play supports learning, The physical environment affects the type and quality of learning interactions, Teacher, family, and partnerships promote development and learning

  

Promotes positive behavior guidance to help children develop appropriate classroom and social interaction skills. Practices effective behavior management skills and strategies


Supervises children at all times, keeping appropriate teacher-to-child ratio at all times and keeping the teacher informed of any issues.

 

Works with parents to assume leadership role in educating their child.

 

Working with the Teacher, conduct two home visits and two classroom conferences with families to discuss the child’s progress and include family members in creating child development goals.

 

Mentor new teachers on classroom operations, Head Start performance standards, policies and procedures.

 

Ability to manage last minute changes in staff scheduling and daily routines.

 

Must follow agency procedures for reporting suspected child abuse and neglect.

 

Must attend required trainings and all requested staff or community meetings. Must work collaboratively with staff and community providers.

 

Education and/or Experience                                                

At a minimum, have a CDA credential or a state-awarded certificate that meets or exceeds the requirements for a CDA credential, are enrolled in a program that will lead to an associate or baccalaureate degree or, are enrolled in a CDA credential program to be completed within two years of the time of hire.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Acceptable NYS Driver's License. Clearance through the NYS Maltreatment Registry. Must complete Dare Care regulation trainings as required.

 

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

 

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
