UPK Teacher
Position: UPK Teacher (2 open
positions)
Program: Universal Pre-Kindergarten
Reports to: Classroom Supervisor
Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 37.5 hours week, 43-44 weeks per
year
1 position will be 7:00am – 3:00pm, 1
position will be 9:00am – 5:00pm, Specific
time selection will be part of recruitment and selection process
Starting Wage: $20.73 - $21.19 per hour
Job Function: Responsible for conducting an educational,
social/emotional, developmentally appropriate center based program for enrolled
children by implementing the NYS Day Care Regulations and other mandates.
Responsible for the day to day operation of the classroom by performing the
following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other
duties may be assigned.
· Make decisions about the
education of children including child development and how children learn;
individual child strengths, needs and interests of each child, and the cultures
of each child’s family and community.
· Follow and practice the
following fundamental principles to create a positive, safe, and creative
learning environment for children, families, and instructors.
· Administers cognitive, and
social emotional screenings of enrolled children to develop ongoing
individualize educational goals for each child.
· Observes, records, and
files observations of children. Keep ongoing records of the child’s progress.
· Conduct two home visits
and two classroom conferences with families throughout the year as per the HS
planning calendar to discuss the child’s progress and include family members in
creating child development goals.
· Arrange and prepares
classrooms to facilitate the NYS Common Core curriculum, IMIL, Conscious
Discipline, Active Play, and the Pyramid Model. Plans and executes daily
lesson plans. Adds activities to lesson plans to maximize classroom
experiences.
· Helps to promote a
literacy rich environment which encourages the development of the children’s
language skills.
· Engages children in active
learning experiences. Provides positive behavior guidance, reflective of
classroom and individual children’s needs.
· Engages with children and
families, showing affection, interest and respect.
· Must provide for daily
supervision of children.
· Acts as advocate for early
childhood developmentally appropriate practices.
· Holds overall
responsibility for day to day required paperwork as per each Head Start
functional area.
· Collect, track, and
maintain information and data for Program reporting.
· Work collaboratively with
classroom team (i.e. Teacher Assistant & Classroom Aides), taking the lead
role in mentoring new staff in the classroom.
· Monitor and complete
multiple assessments for practicum students as necessary.
· Must follow agency
procedures for reporting suspected child abuse and neglect.
· Promptly notify Health
Services RN and/or Coordinator as well as Supervisor in the event of an
emergency health concern while adhering to all Program guidelines and
standards, including but not limited to standard set forth by the NYS Office of
Children and Family Services.
· Must attend require
trainings and all requested staff or community meetings
· May be requested to work
one-on-one with students as needed in the classroom to support the overall
curriculum, behaviors, and classroom functions.

Education and/or Experience: Must have Bachelor of Science Degree
in Early Childhood Education.. UPK Teachers must possess a NYS Birth – 2
initial or professional teaching certificate or a 5-year plan of study for
obtaining a valid teaching certificate.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
NYS Driver's License preferred.
Clearance through the NYS Child Abuse/Maltreatment Registry. Must complete NY
OCFS Daycare regulation trainings as required.
Other qualifications: Physical Examination, TB
Testing upon hire. Fingerprinting for criminal background per the standards set
forth by daycare licensing. Must be able to travel to all sites, trainings,
visits, etc. as necessary and requested.
