Adult Education Instructor

Position: Adult Education Instructor
Program: Family Development
Reports to: Adult Education Coordinator          
Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Schedule: 24 hours week, 52 weeks per year
Starting Wage: $17.00 - $18.50/hour

 

Job Function: Instructs out-of-school youths and adults in academic and non-academic courses by performing the following duties.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

·         Assist in planning, development and coordinating a continuing program with resident groups, individuals, organizations, and agencies in the community.

·         Teach basic math, reading, and writing skills to students with varying academic levels.

·         Prepare students to take and pass the GED exam or other New York State-designated high school equivalency exam with subjects, including math, reading, writing, social studies, and science.

·         Presents lectures and discussions to groups to increase students' knowledge or vocational competence.

·         Assess individual student progress, adapt curriculum, and lesson plans to the needs of the students.

·         Understand individual students’ goals beyond the GED and help them remain motivated to succeed.

·         Help students understand how subject matter relates to future goals.

·         Assess students’ readiness to take GED exams.

·         Assist with the recruitment and intake assessment of prospective students.

·         Encourage and motivate students throughout their progress.

·         Attend relevant staff meetings and participate in programmatic activities.

·         Collaborate with program staff to improve instructional strategies during ongoing meetings.

·         Work with the Adult Education Coordinator, Family Development Director, and Family Development staff to ensure that students have access to other agency services, if needed.

·         Use computer and copy machine to prepare materials.

·         Maintain time sheets and other documentation as required by CAPCO agency and Family Development Director

 

As Required 

       

·         Assist with the recruitment and retention of volunteers in the Adult Education Program.

·         Coordinate social activities for students.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and sit. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

 

 

Education and/or Experience                                                 

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year College or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong background in teaching math and general studies desired.  Experience with youth and young adults (ages 16-21) helpful.  Experience with GED preparation useful.

 

Computer Skills                                                  

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc)

 

Other Skills and Abilities                                                         

·         Become familiar with New York State regulations and testing center policies concerning GED applications procedures for youth, 16-18.

·         Be familiar with other GED programs in area – times, locations, and admissions criteria.

·         Be familiar with available GED preparation materials and online resources.
